Estimates of paleo-crustal thickness at Cerro Aconcagua (Southern Central Andes) from detrital proxy-records: Implications for models of continental arc evolution

چکیده

The Central Andes represent the archetypical Cordilleran orogenic system, with a well-developed continental volcanic arc and some of thickest crust on Earth. Yet relative contributions shortening magmatic additions to crustal thickening remain difficult quantify, which hinders understanding processes evolution in arcs. Cerro Aconcagua, highest mountain Americas relict Miocene stratovolcano resting 55 km-thick crust, is ideal natural laboratory address this issue subduction-related arcs because it preserves multi-million year record magmatism deformation within Aconcagua fold-thrust belt. Estimates paleo-crustal thickness can be made using geochemistry rocks, or minerals crystallized them. This study applies geochemical proxy approach for estimates detrital syntectonic deposits Santa Maria Conglomerate derived from reconstruct at latitude. Detrital zircon trace-element data ashes intercalated conglomerate, combined previously published data, indicate thicknesses ?35 km ca. 38 Ma ?44 12 Ma, requiring ?11 after achieve present-day ?55 km. In absence significant since 10 location, we show that more than half corresponding 2 uplift, was achieved by shortening. Our also reveals differences between southern speculate may due southward flow during last ?20 My.

Crustal contributions to arc magmatism in the Andes of Central Chile

Fifteen andesite-dacite stratovolcanoes on the volcanic front of a single segment of the Andean arc show along-arc changes in isotopic and elemental ratios that demonstrate large crustal contributions to magma genesis. All 15 centers lie 90 km above the Benioff zone and 280 _+ 20 km from the trench axis. Rate and geometry of subduction and composition and age of subducted sediments and seafloor...

An integrated crustal velocity field for the central Andes

[1] Abstract: We present an integrated velocity field for the central Andes, derived from GPS observations collected between January 1993 and March 2001 that eliminates the velocity bias between the South America-Nazca Plate Project (SNAPP) and central Andes GPS Project (CAP) velocity fields published by Norabuena et al. [1998] and Bevis et al. [1999]. The reference frame is realized by minimiz...

COnstructing Proxy Records from Age models (COPRA)

Reliable age models are fundamental for any palaeoclimate reconstruction. Available interpolation procedures between age control points are often inadequately reported, and very few translate age uncertainties to proxy uncertainties. Most available modeling algorithms do not allow incorporation of layer counted intervals to improve the confidence limits of the age model in question. We present ...
